Brian Montieth Edges Stevie Smith for the Dirt Classic Win and $20,000

Brian Montieth capped off a championship season at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night, September 26, with a thrilling $20,000 win at the 2nd Annual Dirt Classic Presented by Wayback Burgers.

The 40-lap A-Main may have been capped off by an exchange of slide jobs, but the first 20 laps seemed like a different race for Montieth, who started in the third position. Inaugural champion Stevie Smith led the field to the green flag, but second place starter Brent Marks was able to take the lead on the start while Montieth battled with fourth-place starter Jac Haudenschild.

The front of the field reached lapped traffic by the eighth circuit, with Marks consistently running the high line. Smith was able to take the lead in traffic from Marks on the bottom through turns three and four on lap 12, while Haudenschild was able to make the pass on Montieth for the third spot. A lap 15 caution for Mike Bittinger slowed the field.

The field got a clean restart with Smith jumping out to a strong lead over Marks, Haudenschild, Montieth and Greg Hodnett. But it was a lap 20 caution for Alan Krimes on lap 20 that changed Montieth’s fate. When the field took the green flag once again, Montieth was able to jump two positions from fourth to second behind Smith.

“That restart when I went from fourth to second, that was the kicker for me,” Montieth said. “The car started to go and I got off my butt, I guess.”

And ‘go’ it did. For six laps, Montieth worked lapped traffic, trying different lines to catch Smith and was able to make the pass on to lead lap 27. It looked like lapped traffic might again add an element of difficulty to the race on lap 32, when Smieth was able to regain ground as Montieth dove low lapping Brian Carber.

“I knew

[lapped traffic] was going to make it interesting,” Montieth said. “I’ve lost races here to lapped traffic, and won them.”

Smith was able to stay close to Montieth throughout the remaining laps, and, with the count ticking down, threw a last-chance slide job at the Auto Locator/Premier Auto Works #21 with two laps to go.

“I don’t know if I got comfortable but once I saw him I had to get back up on the wheel again,” Montieth said. “If I’d made a mistake, it was on me. I knew Stevie was going to be tough and I was just trying to make the track as wide as I could on that last one.”

Montieth was able to retain the lead and march the Jerry Parrish-owned #21 to victory lane for the $20,000 check and custom-designed trophy made by Moose Blocks.

“When I got back into second I felt like I could catch back up to him but he did a nice job,” Smith said of Montieth. “He passed me fair and clean, and off he went to win the $20,000. We’ll have to settle for second.”

Marks was able to finish third over Haudenschild and a charging Danny Dietrich, who started 17th on the field. Hodnett, Aaron Ott, Gerard McIntyre, Jr and Dave Blaney rounded out the top ten.
