(PETERSEN MEDIA)- Friday night at Attica Raceway Park, Tim Shaffer took advantage of a late race restart ,and some good fortune, as he led the final four laps to claim the Dirt Classic Ohio Preliminary night win.
Brian Lay and Craig Mintz would find themselves on the front row of the 30-lap affair, and when the green flag was displayed it was Mintz jumping out to the early lead.
Cap Henry would have a good start as well as he jumped into the second spot just as the race was slowed with one lap in the books. Back underway, Henry would make a big move to take over the race lead, as Lay followed suit a lap later and took over the second position.
Lay would then make quick work of Henry, as he took over the top spot on the fourth lap before the caution was again displayed this time for a slowing Mintz who made a quick trip to the work area.
With Mintz tagging the back of the field, Lay would jump on the throttle when the green lights flashed and begin to pull away form the field as the race got into an extended green flag run.
Things looked to get interesting as the race neared the halfway point, but a lap 14 caution would slow the pace and keep the leaders out of traffic for the time being.
Nailing his restart, Lay would again take off and leave the field in his wake as the best battle on the track was for the second spot as Shaffer and Henry began to duke it out to the crowd’s delight.
As Shaffer and Henry continued to exchange haymakers, Lay had worked his way to a three second lead until the field was reset by a lap 22 caution flag.
The ensuing restart saw Shaffer hang with Lay and even show him his nose, but Lay was able to keep him at bay as Rob Chaney made a big move advancing from sixth to third. Chaney’s move would be for not though, as he slid off turn four and brought out the race’s final caution.
Looking for another good restart, Lay’s machine would stumble as he was low on fuel and Shaffer would be there to capitalize as he surged his way into the top spot. Shaffer would go on to lead the final four laps of the race to take home the win over Broc Martin, 14th starting Bryon Reed, 17th starting Joey Saldana, and Andrew Pelker who rounded out the Top-Five.
A total of 32 cars checked into Attica Raceway Park on Friday night, and it was Carson Macedo setting quick time honors aboard the Pete Grove No. 70 machine.
Four heat races were ran with wins going to Jody Keegan, Travis Philo, Brian Lay and Rob Chaney, as DJ Foos took home the B Main win.
